Monte Bicco is a mountain located in the Marche region of central Italy. It is part of the Monte Bove massif, situated in the northern section of the Monti Sibillini range.
Location and Physical Characteristics
Monte Bicco has an elevation of 2,052 meters (6,732 ft) above sea level, with a prominence of 39 meters. It is located in the province of Macerata, within the territory of the commune of Ussita. Its coordinates are approximately 42°55′02″N 13°11′20″E.
The mountain is described as a limestone pyramid that appears to rest on the southern flank of Monte Bove. Its crest gently curves northward, descending toward the entrance of the Val di Bove.
Terrain and Slopes
The northern slope of Monte Bicco consists of limestone rock ledges that rise from the Val di Bove, along with pastures and beech forests. The southern slope features steep meadows and rock formations that overlook the ski slopes of the Frontignano di Ussita ski resort.
Climbing and Hiking
Monte Bicco is considered alpinistically interesting, particularly in winter. The mountain features several bolted climbing routes on the limestone slabs exposed to the south, as well as on the lower limestone buttresses within the Val di Bove, near the path arriving from the opposite side (Cristo delle Nevi). The crag at Monte Bicco, containing approximately 12–20 short climbing routes (mostly 7–15 meters in length), was reportedly disassembled (bolts removed) as of August 2016.
The mountain is a popular hiking destination, with routes including the "Giro delle Creste," a loop trail connecting Monte Bicco, Monte Bove Sud, and Monte Bove Nord. Hiking routes typically require good fitness, sure-footedness, and alpine experience.
Conservation
Monte Bicco lies within the Parco Nazionale dei Monti Sibillini (Monti Sibillini National Park). Certain adjacent areas (Monte Bove) are subject to restricted access due to the reintroduction of the chamois (Rupicapra pyrenaica).
