Mongla Upazila is an administrative subdivision located in the Bagerhat District of the Khulna Division in southwestern Bangladesh. It is situated near the confluence of the Pusur and Rampal rivers, close to the Bay of Bengal, and lies approximately 70 kilometers south of Khulna city. Mongla serves as a major port area and is home to the Mongla Port, the second largest seaport in Bangladesh after the Port of Chittagong. The upazila plays a significant role in the country's maritime trade and transportation network.
The administrative center of Mongla Upazila is the town of Mongla. The area is part of the Sundarbans region, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and lies in close proximity to this vast mangrove forest. Due to its location, the upazila faces environmental challenges, including salinity intrusion, cyclones, and the impact of climate change.
Mongla Upazila covers a total area of approximately 403.87 square kilometers and is divided into several union parishads (local government units), including Mongla Municipal area. The population is primarily Bengali, with Islam being the dominant religion.
Economically, the region is supported by port-related activities, fishing, agriculture, and small-scale industries. Infrastructure development has been ongoing, especially in transportation and energy, due to its strategic importance.
The upazila is accessible by road and waterways, with road connections to Khulna and nearby towns. Efforts have been made in recent years to upgrade port facilities and improve connectivity to enhance trade efficiency.
Government and administrative functions are managed under the upazila parishad system, which is part of Bangladesh's local governance framework.
