Description
Molophilus ater is a species of crane fly belonging to the family Limoniidae. Adult individuals are relatively small for crane flies, typically measuring 5–7 mm in body length. The species is characterized by a dark (often almost black) coloration of the thorax and abdomen, from which the specific epithet “ater” (Latin for “black”) is derived. The wings are translucent with a faint venation pattern typical of the genus Molophilus. Antennae are slender and composed of 13 segments, as is common in Limoniidae.

Distribution
The species is primarily Palearctic. Recorded occurrences include:

  • Europe: United Kingdom, Ireland, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, Scandinavia (Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland), and parts of Central and Eastern Europe.
  • Western Asia: Limited records from the Caucasus region.

Habitat
Molophilus ater favors moist, shaded environments where its larvae can develop in decaying plant material, leaf litter, and damp soil. Typical habitats include:

  • Woodlands and forest edges with abundant leaf litter.
  • Marshy meadows and riparian zones.
  • Gardens and parklands with high humidity.

Life Cycle

  • Adult: Short-lived (a few days to a week); primarily active during late spring to early summer. Adults are weak fliers and are often encountered resting on low vegetation.

Ecological Role
Larvae contribute to the breakdown of organic material, facilitating nutrient cycling in temperate ecosystems. Adults may serve as prey for insectivorous birds and other arthropods.

Conservation Status
The species has not been evaluated by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). It is generally regarded as common within suitable habitats across its range and does not presently face significant threats.
