Modrac Lake

Modrac Lake (Bosnian: Modracičko jezero) is an artificial reservoir located on the Bosna River near the town of Ilidža, approximately 10 km southwest of Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Constructed in the 1960s, the lake was formed by the damming of the Bosna River to serve multiple municipal functions, including water supply, flood control, and recreation.

Geography and Hydrology

  • Coordinates: 43°51′N 18°18′E.
  • Surface area: Approximately 1.5 km² (0.58 sq mi).
  • Maximum depth: Around 30 m (98 ft).
  • Catchment: The lake receives inflow primarily from the Bosna River and its tributaries within the Sarajevo basin.

Historical Development
The reservoir was created during the socialist period of Yugoslavia as part of a broader water management strategy for the Sarajevo region. The dam, a concrete gravity structure, was completed in 1965, and the lake began to fill shortly thereafter. The project was undertaken to augment the municipal water supply and to mitigate seasonal flooding downstream.

Water Supply and Utilities
Modrac Lake is a key source of potable water for the greater Sarajevo metropolitan area. Water treatment facilities located adjacent to the reservoir process the lake’s water for distribution to households and industrial users. The lake’s capacity and regulated outflow help stabilize water availability throughout the year.

Recreation and Tourism
Since the 1990s, Modrac Lake has become a popular site for leisure activities. The shoreline hosts several recreational facilities, including:

  • Walking and cycling paths.
  • Picnic areas and small cafés.
  • Facilities for fishing, with species such as carp, catfish, and perch reported in the lake.
  • Limited boating and kayaking, subject to municipal regulations.

The lake’s proximity to Sarajevo makes it a frequent destination for residents seeking outdoor recreation, and it is occasionally featured in regional tourism promotions.

Environmental Aspects
The creation of the reservoir altered the local ecosystem, converting riverine habitats into lentic (still water) environments. Over time, the lake has supported a range of aquatic flora and fauna, including macrophytes along its shallower margins and various bird species that utilize the shoreline for nesting and feeding. Periodic monitoring by the Institute of Public Health of Sarajevo evaluates water quality parameters to ensure compliance with health standards.

Infrastructure and Management
Management of Modrac Lake falls under the jurisdiction of the Sarajevo Canton Water Supply and Sewerage Company (Komunalac). Responsibilities include:

  • Maintenance of the dam and spillway structures.
  • Regulation of water levels to balance supply needs with flood mitigation.
  • Oversight of recreational use and enforcement of environmental protection measures.

Cultural Significance
While primarily functional, Modrac Lake holds a place in the collective memory of Sarajevo’s residents as a landmark associated with post‑World War II development and contemporary urban life. The lake is occasionally referenced in local literature and media as a symbol of the city’s relationship with its natural surroundings.
