Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way is a major arterial road in Ikeja, Lagos State, Nigeria. It is named after Sir Mobolaji Bank Anthony (1907–1991), a prominent Yoruba Nigerian businessman, philanthropist, and former council president of the Lagos Stock Exchange.
Route and Description
The road is a four-to-six-lane divided arterial route cutting through southern Ikeja. It begins after interchanging with Ikorodu Road (the A1 highway) in Maryland. From there, it travels northwest, bypassing Maryland, Ikeja Government Reserved Area (GRA), and Computer Village. At its western end, it interchanges with Agege Motor Road (the A5 highway). The road serves as a key connector between Maryland and the local airport area.
Commercial Significance
Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way is lined with numerous businesses, including banks, hotels, car showrooms, service stations, and supermarkets. It is considered a strictly business-oriented area. Several major Nigerian banks maintain branches along the road, including Guaranty Trust Bank (GTBank), First City Monument Bank (FCMB), and Access Bank. Notable landmarks include the Sheraton Lagos Hotel, located at 30 Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way.
Namesake
The road is named after Oloye Sir Mobolaji Bank Anthony, KBE (11 June 1907 – 26 May 1991). Born in the Kinshasa region of Belgian Congo, he was a Nigerian businessman who began his career as a junior clerk in the Post and Telegraphs Department before building a business empire that included importing fountain pens, watches, and clocks. At one time, he was the third-largest seller of fountain pens in Nigeria. He held distribution rights for Rootes Group automobiles, was a director of Mobil Oil Nigeria and Friesland Foods, and served as chairman of the Italian construction firm Borini Prono and Company, which was involved in building the Ijora Causeway and other major roads. He was also a philanthropist who donated a ward to the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Igbobi, and built Ayinke House, which houses the Ikeja General Hospital.
