Mo Tae-bum

Mo Tae-bum (Korean: 모태범; born March 1, 1989) is a South Korean former short‑track speed skater and long‑track speed skater, best known for winning the gold medal in the men's 500 metres at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. He is the first South Korean athlete to win an Olympic gold medal in a long‑track speed skating event.

Early life and education
Mo was born in Seoul, South Korea. He began skating at a young age, initially training in short‑track before transitioning to long‑track speed skating in his teenage years. He attended Korea National Sport University, where he continued his athletic development.

Speed skating career

International debut
Mo made his World Cup debut in the 2008–2009 season, competing in the 500 m and 1000 m distances. He quickly established himself as a specialist in sprint events.

World Championships
He earned his first major international medal at the 2009 World Single Distance Championships, winning bronze in the 500 m. He subsequently won silver in the same distance at the 2010 World Single Distance Championships.

2010 Winter Olympics
At the Vancouver Games, Mo competed in the 500 m, 1000 m, and the 5000 m relay. He secured gold in the 500 m with a time of 34.92 seconds, becoming the first South Korean to win an Olympic gold medal in long‑track speed skating. He placed 7th in the 1000 m and 9th in the relay.

Later career
Following the Olympics, Mo continued to compete on the World Cup circuit, achieving several podium finishes in the 500 m. He participated in the 2011 World Single Distance Championships, winning bronze in the 500 m. Mo retired from competitive skating in 2015.

Post‑retirement
After retiring, Mo has been involved in coaching and promoting speed skating in South Korea. He has also served as a commentator for national television broadcasts of speed skating events.

Personal life
Mo is married to former South Korean figure skater Kim Yuna’s sister, Kim Min-ji. He is known for his low public profile and dedication to the sport.
