Miyata, Fukuoka

Miyata was a former town located in Kurate District, Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan. It occupied an area of 36.36 km² (14.04 sq mi). As of 2003, the town had an estimated population of 41,995, yielding a population density of approximately 1,154.66 persons per km².

On 11 February 2006, Miyata merged with the neighboring town of Wakamiya, also from Kurate District, to create the city of Miyawaka (宮若市). Following the merger, Miyata ceased to exist as an independent municipal entity.

The name Miyata is written with the kanji characters 三屋, which translate literally as “three” (三) and “shop” or “house” (屋). Specific historical or linguistic explanations for the town’s name are not detailed in widely available encyclopedic sources.

Miyata was situated in the northern part of Fukuoka Prefecture, characterized by a mix of residential areas and agricultural land.
