Miva Open University is a private online university based in Abuja, Nigeria. Established in 2023 by the educational technology company uLesson, it operates as a distance‑learning institution offering undergraduate and postgraduate programmes across a range of disciplines.
History
The university was founded on 10 March 2023 by the uLesson Group, an edtech firm active in several West African countries. It received its operating licence from the National Universities Commission (NUC) on 16 May 2023, becoming a registered university under Nigerian law. Admissions opened on 25 May 2023, initially offering eight programmes within two faculties. Since its inception, Miva Open University has expanded its academic portfolio to include additional undergraduate courses and several master's degrees, such as an MBA launched on 2 April 2024 and a Master of Public Administration introduced on 7 October 2024. In February 2025, the NUC approved two further postgraduate programmes—Master of Public Health (MPH) and Master of Information Technology (MIT)—to commence in the 2024/2025 academic session.
Academic Structure
The university is organised into multiple schools and faculties that deliver programmes in areas such as:

Miva Open University is licensed and regulated by the National Universities Commission, the statutory body responsible for university accreditation in Nigeria. The institution’s chancellor is Sim Shagaya, while the vice‑chancellor is Professor Tayo Arulogun.

Although the university’s primary administrative campus is located in Abuja, its instructional model relies on a digital platform that provides course materials, assessments, and student support services remotely.
