Missouri Route 14

Missouri Route 14 (abbreviated MO 14) is an east–west state highway in the southern portion of the U.S. state of Missouri. The route traverses the Ozark Plateau, providing a primary east‑west corridor through a largely rural area and linking a series of small towns and communities with the broader Missouri highway network.

Route description

  • Length: Approximately 119 mi (191 km).
  • Orientation: The highway runs generally west‑to‑east.
  • Western terminus: The western end of MO 14 is at an intersection with U.S. Route 65 near the town of Fort Leonard Wood (the exact junction is located just east of the community of Marion).
  • Eastern terminus: The eastern end terminates at an intersection with U.S. Route 63 and Missouri Route 13 near the community of West Plains.

Along its length, MO 14 passes through or near the following municipalities and notable points:

  • Nixa – a suburb of Springfield, where the route briefly follows Central Avenue.
  • Seymour – where it intersects Missouri Route 13.
  • Houston – the county seat of Texas County, intersecting U.S. Route 63.
  • West Plains – the county seat of Howell County, marking the route’s eastern terminus.

The highway also intersects several other state routes, including Missouri Route 5, Missouri Route 76, and Missouri Route 17, and provides access to recreational areas within the Mark Twain National Forest.

History

  • Establishment: Missouri Route 14 was designated as part of the original 1922 state highway system.
  • Realignments: Over the ensuing decades, the route has been subject to minor realignments to improve safety and accommodate new infrastructure, but its overall east‑west alignment across the Ozarks has remained consistent.
  • Pavement: The highway was fully paved by the mid‑20th century, replacing earlier gravel and dirt sections.
