Born on 9 June 1978 in Opole, Poland, Klose moved with his family to Germany at the age of eight. He began his senior club career with 1. FC Kaiserslautern in 1999 before transferring to Werder Bremen (2001–2004), where he won the DFB‑Pokal in 2004. Klose then joined Bayern Munich (2004–2007), winning the Bundesliga title in the 2004–05 season and the DFB‑Liga‑Pokal in 2006. In 2007 he signed with Italian side Lazio, remaining there until his retirement in 2016.
