Mirante do Vale is a high‑rise office building located in the central district of São Paulo, Brazil, at Rua do Oratório, 101. Completed in 1960, the skyscraper stands approximately 170 metres (558 ft) tall and comprises 51 floors, making it the tallest building in São Paulo and one of the tallest structures in Brazil at the time of its inauguration.
Design and construction
Construction of Mirante do Vale began in 1959 and was finished the following year. Publicly available records do not consistently identify a single architect or architectural firm responsible for the design; the project's authorship is therefore not clearly documented in reliable encyclopedic sources.
Usage
Since its opening, the building has been primarily used for commercial office space. Its central location provides occupants with panoramic views of the city, a feature referenced in its name—mirante meaning “viewpoint” in Portuguese.
Historical significance
At the time of its completion, Mirante do Vale surpassed the then‑tallest building in Brazil, the Altino Arantes Building (also known as Banespa). The structure retained the national height record until the early 1970s, when newer skyscrapers were erected in Rio de Janeiro and elsewhere. Despite subsequent developments, Mirante do Vale remains the tallest building within the municipal limits of São Paulo.
Ownership and management
The building is owned by a private real‑estate holding company, which oversees leasing and maintenance of the office suites.
Cultural references
Mirante do Vale has occasionally appeared in Brazilian media and literature as a symbol of São Paulo’s mid‑20th‑century urban growth and modernist architectural ambition.
