Mirages (French: Mirages; alternative title: Si tu m'aimes) is a 1938 French drama film directed by Alexandre Ryder. It is an adaptation of the eponymous play by Léopold Marchand.
Synopsis
The film portrays the romance between Jeanne Dumont (played by Jeanne Aubert), a young woman who rises to stardom as a singer and dancer at the Folies Bergère in Paris, and Pierre Bonvais (played by Jean-Louis Barrault), an engineer who accepts a job in French Algeria. Jeanne initially gives piano lessons while Pierre is unemployed. On the insistence of their friends Arlette and Michel—who work at the Folies Bergère—and despite Pierre's reluctance, Jeanne auditions for the music hall and is hired as a dancer. As her career flourishes, she hides her promotion from Pierre. He eventually senses the growing distance between them from her letters, falls ill, and Jeanne joins him in Algeria for a few weeks before returning to Paris for her career. She becomes the star of the revue while Pierre drifts away permanently.
