Minium is composed of lead(II,IV) oxide, in which two lead atoms are in the +2 oxidation state and one lead atom is in the +4 state, combined with oxygen. Its crystal lattice consists of lead atoms coordinated by oxygen in a layered arrangement, resulting in the characteristic tetragonal symmetry (space group P4/mbm).
Occurrence
The mineral is a secondary lead mineral, forming in the oxidized zones of lead‑bearing ore deposits. It precipitates from the alteration of primary lead sulfides such as galena (PbS) under low‑temperature, oxidizing conditions. Notable occurrences have been documented in the Kola Peninsula (Russia), Brittany (France), the Dolomites (Italy), the Zinc District of Utah (USA), and various other mining districts worldwide.

Historical and Industrial Use
Minium has been used since antiquity as a pigment, commonly termed “red lead” or “Chinese red.” The mineral was ground to produce a bright, durable red color for painting, lacquer, and decorative arts. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, synthetic red lead (produced by the oxidation of metallic lead) largely supplanted the natural mineral in commercial applications, though the term “muminum” persisted in artistic and conservation literature.
Beyond pigmentation, minium’s high density and opacity made it suitable for use in:
- Corrosion‑resistant primers and protective coatings for metal surfaces.
- Fuse compositions and pyrotechnic formulations, where its oxidizing properties are exploited.
