Milton, Kansas

Milton is a city in Sumner County, Kansas, United States. According to the United States Census Bureau, the population was 1,152 at the time of the 2020 census. The city is part of the Wichita, Kansas Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Geography
Milton is situated in the south‑central region of Kansas at coordinates 37°21′33″N 97°48′21″W. The city lies on the north bank of the Arkansas River and is traversed by U.S. Route 81. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.71 square miles (1.84 km²), all of which is land. The elevation of Milton is approximately 1,240 feet (378 m) above sea level.

History
Milton was founded in the early 1880s during the expansion of the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad through the region. The arrival of the railroad spurred settlement and agricultural development. A post office was established in 1881. The city was incorporated in 1904. The origin of the city’s name is attributed by local tradition to Milton, Massachusetts, although definitive documentation is lacking.

Demographics
As of the 2020 census, Milton had 1,152 residents, comprising 459 households and 308 families. The racial composition was reported as predominantly White, with smaller percentages of African American, Native American, Asian, and Hispanic or Latino residents. The median age was 38.4 years, and the gender distribution was approximately 48 % male and 52 % female. The median household income reported in the 2015‑2019 American Community Survey was $53,200, with about 12 % of the population living below the federal poverty line.

Economy
Milton’s economy is closely tied to agriculture, with wheat, sorghum, and cattle production forming the primary economic activities in the surrounding area. Small‑scale manufacturing and service businesses serve local needs, and many residents commute to larger employment centers within the Wichita metropolitan area.

Education
The city is served by the South Haven USD 509 public school district. Milton Elementary School provides education for grades K–5, after which students attend South Haven Middle School and South Haven High School in the neighboring community of South Haven.

Transportation
Milton is accessible via U.S. Route 81, which connects the city to Wichita to the north and Wellington to the south. The nearest commercial airport is Wichita Dwight D. Eisenhower National Airport, located approximately 45 miles to the north. Freight rail service continues to operate on lines originally laid in the 19th century, although passenger rail service is no longer available.
