Milton Raymond Hook (born 1939) is an Australian Seventh‑day Adventist educator, author, and church historian. He holds the position of honorary research fellow at Avondale College in New South Wales, Australia.
Early life and education
Hook was born in Perth, Western Australia, and attended North Inglewood and Bickley elementary schools before enrolling at Carmel College and Kent Street Senior High School. After completing teacher‑training placements in Manjimup and Victoria Park (1958–1959), he pursued further studies at Avondale College, obtaining an Elementary Teachers Certificate (1961) and a Bachelor of Arts (1964). He later earned a Master of Arts and a Doctor of Education from Andrews University in Michigan, completing his doctorate in 1978 with a dissertation titled “The Avondale School and Adventist Educational Goals, 1894–1900.” He also studied at the Evangelical Lutheran Seminary in Ohio (now Trinity Lutheran Seminary).
Career
Hook has served in a variety of roles within the Seventh‑day Adventist Church, including:
- Pastorates in Australia and Ohio, United States.
- Mission director in Papua New Guinea.
- Religion teacher at elementary, academy, and college levels in Australia, New Zealand, and the United States.
He retired from ministerial duties in the Greater Sydney Conference in 1997, after which he continued as a conjoint senior lecturer at Avondale College. Hook has also been active in community organisations, notably the Rotary Club (President of the Waitara branch, Sydney, 1984–1995) and several philatelic societies.
Scholarly contributions
Hook is recognised for his research on Adventist history, particularly for being the only known Australian to have examined all Australian manuscripts of Ellen G. White written between 1892 and 1901. His publications include:
- Flames Over Battle Creek (1977) – based on his master’s research.
- Avondale: Experiment on the Dora (1998).
- Desmond Ford: Reformist Theologian, Gospel Revivalist (2008) – a biography of the controversial Adventist theologian, which generated discussion within Adventist scholarly circles.
He has contributed articles and book chapters to journals such as Ministry Record, Signs of the Times (Australia), Adventist Heritage, and Avondale Reflections, and has served as an editor for various Adventist publications.
Professional affiliations
Hook has held leadership positions in the Sydney Adventist Forum, serving as its president, and participates in the Eastwood‑Epping Philatelic Society, the Royal Sydney Philatelic Club, and the Philatelic Society of New South Wales.
