Etymology / Origin
The name “Milton” derives from the Old English elements middel (middle) and tūn (farmstead or settlement), indicating a “middle farm” or settlement situated between other habitations. The suffix “Ernest” is thought to originate from the name of the medieval lords of the manor, the de Ernest family, who held the estate after the Norman Conquest. This combination yields the meaning “the middle settlement associated with the Ernest family.”
