Milove

Milove (Ukrainian: Мілове; Russian: Меловое, Melovoye) is an urban-type settlement in Luhansk Oblast, eastern Ukraine. It serves as the administrative center of Milove Raion (district). The settlement is located on the Ukrainian-Russian border, with the Russian settlement of Chertkovo (Rostov Oblast) immediately adjacent on the other side. This geographical proximity has historically made Milove a significant border crossing point.

Etymology and History: The name "Milove" is derived from the Ukrainian word "mil" (міл), meaning "chalk" or "limestone," likely referring to the chalk deposits found in the region. The settlement was founded in the late 19th century, developing around a railway station established in 1898 on the Valuyki-Luhansk railway line. Its strategic location on the railway and the border contributed to its growth as a trade and administrative center.

During World War II, Milove was occupied by Nazi German forces from 1942 to 1943. After the war, it continued to develop as a local center for agriculture and trade.

Geography and Economy: Milove is situated in the northern part of Luhansk Oblast, characterized by a steppe landscape. The local economy is primarily agricultural, with grain cultivation and livestock farming being prominent. Its function as a border crossing point has also historically contributed to its economic activity, facilitating trade and transit between Ukraine and Russia. The railway line remains an important infrastructure element.

Demographics: As an urban-type settlement, Milove has a population that has fluctuated over time, reflecting broader demographic trends in the region. The population is predominantly Ukrainian-speaking, with a significant Russian-speaking minority due to its border location.

Border Significance: The unique characteristic of Milove is its direct adjacency to the Russian settlement of Chertkovo, where the international border runs directly through streets and even some buildings. This close proximity has historically led to a high degree of interaction between the two communities. However, following the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, the border crossing function and civilian movement have been severely disrupted, and the area has been significantly affected by the conflict.
