Mikhail Pokpov

Mikhail Danilovich Pokpov (Russian: Михаил Данилович Попков; 14 November 1924 – 23 August 2023) was a Soviet-Russian military officer and politician. A member of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (CPSU), he served in the Soviet of Nationalities from 1984 to 1989. He was awarded the Order of the Red Star in 1944.

Pokpov was born on 14 November 1924 in the village of Astapova-Sloboda (also rendered Ostapova-Sloboda), in the Yukhnovsky District of Kaluga Oblast (then part of the Kaluga Governorate of the Russian SFSR, USSR). His father, Daniil Filippovich Popkov (1899–1943), and mother, Tatyana Ivanovna Popkova (1900–1987), were his parents. He had two brothers, Victor Danilovich Popkov (1932–1989) and Nikolai Danilovich Popkov.

His education included attendance at the Lenin Military-Political Academy and the Military Academy of the General Staff of the USSR Armed Forces. He served as a member of the Soviet of Nationalities representing the Nakhichevan ASSR during the 1984–1989 term.

Pokpov died in Moscow on 23 August 2023, at the age of 98.

Note: The surname "Pokpov" is a transliteration variant of the Russian surname Попков, which is more commonly rendered in English as "Popkov." This entry refers to the Soviet military officer and politician Mikhail Danilovich Popkov, and should not be confused with Mikhail Viktorovich Popkov (born 1964), the Russian serial killer known as the "Werewolf of Angarsk," who is a separate individual.
