Mike Utley

Michael Gerard Utley (born December 20, 1965) is an American former professional football player who played as an offensive guard for the Detroit Lions of the National Football League (NFL). He is notable for a career‑ending spinal‑cord injury sustained during a 1991 regular‑season game, after which he became an advocate for spinal‑injury research and rehabilitation through the Mike Utley Foundation.

Early life and college
Born in Seattle, Washington, Utley attended John F. Kennedy Catholic High School in Burien, Washington. He received a football scholarship to Washington State University, where he played for the Cougars. As a senior in 1988, Utley was a consensus All‑American and helped Washington State win the Aloha Bowl, its first bowl victory since 1916. He was later inducted into the Washington State Athletic Hall of Fame (2004) and the College Football Hall of Fame (2016).

Professional career
Utley was selected in the third round (59th overall) of the 1989 NFL Draft by the Detroit Lions. He became the Lions’ starting right guard as a rookie, missing part of his first season due to injury. Over the next two seasons he dealt with rib fractures, a dislocated shoulder, and other injuries but remained a regular contributor, starting 17 of 32 games played.

Injury and aftermath
On November 17, 1991, while blocking a play against the Los Angeles Rams, Utley suffered a severe cervical spinal‑cord injury that left him quadriplegic, though he retained functional use of his upper extremities. He famously gave a thumbs‑up to the crowd as he was taken off the field; the gesture later became the symbol of his foundation. Utley underwent rehabilitation at Craig Hospital, a specialist spinal‑injury facility.

Mike Utley Foundation
In 1991 Utley and his agent Bruce Allen established the Mike Utley Foundation. The nonprofit’s mission is to financially support research into function‑restoring treatments for spinal‑cord injuries, promote rehabilitative lifestyles for those injured, and raise public awareness of spinal‑cord injury issues. The foundation provides grants for research, equipment, and educational programs, and it maintains the “thumbs‑up” logo as a sign of hope and perseverance.

Honors and legacy
Utley’s perseverance earned him the NFL’s George Halas Award in 1992. He has been recognized for his contributions to sport and advocacy, including the Walter Camp Man of the Year award (2006). His story is frequently cited as an example of resilience and has inspired continued efforts to improve spinal‑cord injury treatment and support for affected individuals.
