Mike Rawlings (born July 15, 1954) is an American businessman and politician who served as the 58th mayor of Dallas, Texas, from June 2011 to June 2019. He succeeded Tom Leppert and was followed in office by Eric Johnson.
Early life and education
Born and raised in Dallas, Rawlings attended Highland Park High School. He earned a Bachelor of Business Administration from Southern Methodist University in 1977.
Business career
Rawlings spent much of his early professional life in the restaurant industry. He held executive positions with several corporations, most notably serving as President of Pizza Hut International during the late 1990s. He also held senior roles at other firms, including as a senior vice president of PepsiCo’s restaurant division.
Political career
Prior to his mayoral tenure, Rawlings was a member of the Dallas City Council representing District 8 from 2007 to 2011. In the 2011 mayoral election, he defeated former Dallas Police Chief David Brown. Rawlings was re‑elected in 2015, defeating former Dallas Police Chief David Brown again. During his two terms, he focused on economic development, public safety, and infrastructure improvements. Notable events during his mayoralty include the city’s response to the 2014 Dallas police shooting of Michael Brown and the implementation of the “Dallas Strong” initiative to promote community resilience.
