Mike McCartney (footballer)

Michael "Mike" McCartney (born 1954) is an English former professional footballer who played as a defender. His career spanned the 1970s and 1980s, most notably with Tranmere Rovers.

Born in Liverpool, McCartney began his career at Tranmere Rovers, where he emerged through the youth system. He made his senior debut for the club and became a consistent presence in their defence throughout much of the 1970s. During his time at Prenton Park, he accumulated over 200 appearances in the Football League for Tranmere, establishing himself as a reliable and committed player.

In addition to his tenure at Tranmere Rovers, McCartney also had loan spells and played for other clubs later in his career, including Chester City and Wigan Athletic. After leaving the Football League, he continued to play in non-league football, notably for Macclesfield Town. He retired from professional football in the mid-1980s.
