Miguel Urquiola (born 1968) is a Spanish architect, industrial designer, and creative director known for his work in furniture, lighting, interior design, and product development. He has collaborated with a range of international design brands, including Moroso, Foscarini, Kartell, B&B Italia, Flos, and Louis Vuitton, among others.
Early life and education
Urquiola was born in San Sebastián, Spain. He studied architecture at the Escola Tècnica Superior d'Arquitectura de Barcelona (ETSAB) and later completed a Master of Design at the Domus Academy in Milan.
Career
1990s – Multi
After graduating, Urquiola joined the Spanish design studio Multi, where he served as creative director. During his tenure, he contributed to a variety of product and furniture collections that emphasized experimental forms and material innovation.
2000s – Moroso
In 2002, Urquiola was appointed creative director of the Italian furniture manufacturer Moroso. Under his leadership, Moroso released several critically acclaimed collections, such as the “Spherical” and “Volterra” series, which solidified his reputation for combining organic shapes with contemporary aesthetics.
2010s – Independent studio
Urquiola founded his own studio, Miguel Urquiola Studio, after leaving Moroso in 2012. The practice works across multiple design disciplines, offering services in product design, interior architecture, and branding. Notable projects have included the interior design of the Hôtel de Crillon in Paris (in collaboration with Louis Vuitton), furniture for the store at the Milan Design Week, and lighting collections for Foscarini.
