Miguel Maia

Miguel Maia (born January 23, 1971) is a Portuguese former professional beach volleyball player. He is widely recognized as one of Portugal's most successful athletes in the sport, particularly for his long-standing and highly effective partnership with João Brenha.

Career: Maia began his professional beach volleyball career and, along with João Brenha, formed one of the most prominent teams on the international circuit. Together, they represented Portugal in three consecutive Olympic Games:

  • 1996 Atlanta Olympics: They achieved a remarkable 4th place finish, narrowly missing out on a medal.
  • 2000 Sydney Olympics: The duo repeated their impressive performance, again securing 4th place. This remains one of Portugal's strongest results in Olympic beach volleyball.
  • 2004 Athens Olympics: They made their third appearance at the Olympic Games.

Throughout their partnership, Maia and Brenha were consistent contenders on the FIVB World Tour, frequently placing among the top teams in various international competitions. Their dynamic play and technical skill made them formidable opponents globally.
