Miguel Mario Díaz-Canel Bermúdez (born 20 April 1960) is a Cuban politician who has served as the President of the Republic of Cuba since 19 April 2021 and as the First Secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba, the nation's highest political office, since 19 April 2021. He previously held the positions of Vice President of the Council of State and Council of Ministers (2013–2018) and President of the Council of State and Council of Ministers (2018–2021), making him the first civilian to occupy Cuba's top executive role since the 1959 revolution, which was previously held by members of the revolutionary leadership.
Early life and education
Miguel Díaz-Canel was born in Placetas, Villa Clara Province, Cuba, to a middle‑class family. He graduated from the Central University of Las Villas with a degree in electrical engineering in 1982. Following his graduation, he worked as a professor of electrical engineering at the university and held various technical and administrative posts in the national telecommunications sector.
Political career

Early involvement: Díaz-Canel joined the Young Communist League (UJC) in the early 1980s and became a member of the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC) in 1985. He held local party positions in Villa Clara, including serving as municipal director of the UJC and later as provincial secretary of the PCC.
