Michel Reimon (born 11 July 1971 in Eisenstadt, Burgenland, Austria) is an Austrian politician, author, former journalist, and communications consultant. He is a member of The Greens – The Green Alternative (Die Grünen), part of the European Green Party.
Education and Early Career
Reimon attended primary and secondary school in Siegendorf, Burgenland, and graduated from the HTBLuVA Wien 5 Spengergasse in 1991. He later studied computer science at the University of Derby's Vienna campus (graduating in 2004) and organizational development and consulting at the University of Augsburg, with portions of his studies completed at Johns Hopkins University and Columbia University in the United States. He earned a Master of Business Administration (MBA) in 2009. After his studies, he worked as a freelance communications consultant and journalist.
Political Career
Reimon joined the Greens in 2004 and became press spokesperson for the Burgenland state party organization. In 2010, he was elected as the lead candidate (Spitzenkandidat) of the Burgenland Greens for the state election, receiving 60 out of 61 votes at the party convention. Following the election, he became the sole Green Party representative in the Burgenland Landtag (state parliament), serving from 2010 to 2013.
He served as a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) from 1 July 2014 to 2019, sitting with the Greens/European Free Alliance group. During his term, he was a member of the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy (ITRE) and the delegation for relations with the Mashreq countries. He did not seek re-election to the European Parliament in 2019 for personal reasons.
Since 23 October 2019, Reimon has served as a member of the Austrian National Council (Nationalrat), representing the Greens. His term ended in October 2024. Since 2020, he has also been a member of the Austrian delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), where he serves on the Committee on Legal Affairs and Human Rights.
In November 2023, Reimon announced he would not run in the 2024 European Parliament election, citing his party's stance on the Middle East conflict and the cancellation of the party's federal congress in December 2023.
Publications and Other Activities
Reimon has authored several books, including Days of Action (2002), Schwarzbuch Privatisierung (Black Book of Privatization, 2003, co-authored with Christian Felber), Die sieben Todsünden der EU (The Seven Deadly Sins of the EU, 2008), and the novel #Incommunicado (2012), which he released as a DRM-free, Creative Commons-licensed e-book. He also founded the Demokratischer Salon (Democratic Salon), a registered non-profit association advocating for more direct democracy in Austria. Since 2006, he has held a teaching position at the University of Vienna in the field of political communication.
