Michel Besnier

Michel Besnier (1928 – 2000) was a French businessman best known for his leadership of the multinational food company Danone. Born into the Besnier family, which had founded the company in 1919, he succeeded his father, Antoine Besnier, as chief executive officer in 1955. Under Michel Besnier’s direction, Danone expanded from a small French dairy producer into a global corporation with diversified product lines, including yogurts, bottled waters, and infant nutrition.

Key achievements during his tenure include:

  • International Expansion: Besnier oversaw the acquisition of foreign firms and the establishment of subsidiaries throughout Europe, North America, and Asia, positioning Danone as a major player in the global food industry.
  • Product Innovation: He supported the development and marketing of new dairy products, such as the popular “Activia” probiotic yogurt line, which contributed to the company’s growth in the health‑focused segment.
  • Corporate Restructuring: Besnier implemented modern management practices and streamlined operations, which improved efficiency and profitability.
  • Philanthropy: He was involved in charitable activities, most notably through the Danone Foundation, which supported initiatives in nutrition, health, and education.

Michel Besnier remained at the helm of Danone until his retirement in 1996, after which the company’s leadership passed to his son, Emmanuel Besnier. Michel Besnier’s legacy is marked by transforming a family‑owned dairy business into a multinational corporation with a strong emphasis on nutrition and health. He died in 2000.
