Michael Yaw Gyato (born 2 April 1970) is a Ghanaian politician and member of the Seventh Parliament of the Fourth Republic of Ghana, representing the Krachi East Constituency in the Volta Region (now Oti Region) on the ticket of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Early Life and Education
Michael Yaw Gyato was born on 2 April 1970 in Dambai, in the Volta Region of Ghana. He obtained a Higher National Diploma (HND) from Accra Polytechnic and a Master's degree from the Ghana Institute of Management. He is the founder, board member, and executive director of the Smiling Heart Foundation, a non-profit organization in the Krachi East Municipality of the Oti Region that provides support to the needy and people with disabilities.
Political Career
Gyato served as the District Chief Executive (DCE) for Krachi East District from 2005 to January 2008, and as Managing Director of Agmark ENT in Kete-Krachi. He later served as Deputy Minister for Sanitation and Water Resources in the first term of the Akufo-Addo-led government from 2017 to 2021.
2016 Election
In the 2016 Ghanaian general election, Gyato contested the Krachi East constituency on the NPP ticket and won with 14,551 votes (49.74% of the total), narrowly defeating Wisdom Gidisu of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), who received 14,504 votes (49.58%), and Henry Awatwe of the PPP, who received 199 votes (0.68%).
2020 Election
Gyato again contested the Krachi East parliamentary seat on the NPP ticket in the 2020 Ghanaian general election but lost to Wisdom Gidisu of the National Democratic Congress.
2024 Election
Gyato was the NPP parliamentary candidate for the Krachi East Constituency in the 2024 general elections, during which he campaigned on promises of road infrastructure development and youth employment opportunities.
