Michael Vicens (born 21 January 1956) is a Puerto Rican former basketball player who represented Puerto Rico in international competition, most notably at the 1976 Summer Olympics.
Early life and education
Vicens was born in Ponce, Puerto Rico. He attended Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts, where he played for the Crusaders men’s basketball team from 1974 to 1978.
College career
During his four seasons at Holy Cross, Vicens played as a guard/forward, standing 6 ft 5 in (1.96 m) and weighing 190 lb (86 kg). He contributed to the Crusaders’ strong performance in the mid‑1970s, helping the team achieve multiple 20‑win seasons and earning a berth in the NCAA Tournament.
Professional prospects
In the 1978 NBA Draft, Vicens was selected in the 10th round (187th overall) by the New Jersey Nets. He did not play in the NBA, but his draft selection reflected his standing as one of Puerto Rico’s notable players of the era.
International career
Vicens competed for the Puerto Rican national team at the men’s basketball tournament at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal. He also represented Puerto Rico at the 1974 FIBA World Championship.
