Michael Parkhurst

Michael Parkhurst (born September 19, 1984) is an American former professional soccer player who primarily played as a defender. He is known for his versatility in both right‑back and centre‑back positions and for his extensive career in Major League Soccer (MLS).

Early life and education
Parkhurst was born in Columbus, Ohio, United States. He attended the University of Akron, where he played collegiate soccer for the Akron Zips from 2002 to 2004. During his college career, he earned All‑American honors and contributed to the team's appearance in the NCAA tournament.

Club career

  • Columbus Crew (2005–2010) – Selected 13th overall in the 2005 MLS SuperDraft by his hometown club, Columbus Crew. Parkhurst made his professional debut later that season and became a regular starter. He helped the Crew win the MLS Cup in 2008 and the Supporters' Shield in 2008 and 2009.
  • Portland Timbers (2011) – Traded to the Portland Timbers for the 2011 season, where he appeared in 28 league matches.
  • FC Dallas (2012–2013) – Signed with FC Dallas in January 2012. Parkhurst featured in 61 league games over two seasons and was part of the squad that reached the 2010 MLS Cup final (as a loan return) and won the Supporters' Shield in 2016 after his departure.
  • Return to Columbus Crew (2014–2016) – Rejoined the Crew in 2014. During his second stint, he contributed to Columbus’s second MLS Cup victory in 2015.
  • New England Revolution (2017–2021) – Joined the Revolution in December 2016. He served as a regular starter, making over 120 appearances before leaving the club at the conclusion of the 2021 season.

Parkhurst announced his retirement from professional soccer in early 2022.

International career
Parkhurst earned his first cap for the United States men’s national team (USMNT) on January 31, 2010, in a friendly against Sweden. He accumulated a total of eight senior caps between 2010 and 2014. He was included in the United States roster for the 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cup, where the team finished as runners‑up.

Style of play
Known for his defensive reliability, aerial ability, and tactical awareness, Parkhurst was frequently deployed as a right‑back but also performed effectively as a centre‑back in a back‑four system. His consistency and professionalism were cited by coaches as key attributes throughout his career.
