Michael Milenski

Michael Milenski is an American opera impresario, best known as the founder and long-time General Director of Opera San José. He established the company in 1984 with a mission to provide professional opportunities for young, emerging opera singers and to present full-scale operatic productions to the community.

Milenski’s vision for Opera San José centered on creating a resident company model, where a core group of singers would live in the San Francisco Bay Area, train, and perform multiple roles throughout the season. This model allowed singers to gain significant stage experience and develop their craft in a supportive environment, often serving as a stepping stone to major national and international opera houses. Under his leadership, the company gained recognition for its innovative approach to artist development and its commitment to diverse repertoire, ranging from standard classics to contemporary works.

Before founding Opera San José, Milenski held academic positions, including teaching at the University of California, Santa Barbara. He received his education from Northwestern University. He retired from his role as General Director in 2019, after 35 years at the helm of Opera San José, leaving a significant legacy in the American opera landscape, particularly concerning the nurturing of new vocal talent.
