Michael Kimmel (born February 26, 1951) is an American sociologist and educator known for his extensive work in gender studies, particularly the subfield of men's studies. He served as a Distinguished Professor of Sociology at Stony Brook University and is the founder of the academic journal Men and Masculinities.
Kimmel’s scholarly contributions focus primarily on the social construction of masculinity and the historical development of male identity. His 1996 book, Manhood in America: A Cultural History, explores how the concept of masculinity in the United States has evolved from the late 18th century to the present. In his 2008 work, Guyland: The Perilous World Where Boys Become Men, Kimmel examined the social environments and behavioral patterns of young men during the transition from adolescence to adulthood.
Throughout his career, Kimmel has been an advocate for pro-feminist men’s movements, arguing that gender equality is beneficial for both men and women. He has authored or edited numerous textbooks and articles concerning the sociology of gender, including The Gendered Society.
In 2018, allegations of sexual harassment were made against Kimmel shortly before he was scheduled to receive the Jessie Bernard Award from the American Sociological Association (ASA). Kimmel requested that the award be deferred pending an investigation. He retired from his position at Stony Brook University in 2019.
