Michael G. Waddoups
Michael G. Waddoups (born 1954) is an American attorney, former politician, and retired jurist who served as a Justice of the Utah Supreme Court from 2012 to 2021. Prior to his judicial appointment, Waddoups was a prominent figure in Utah politics, serving multiple terms in the Utah State Senate, including as its President from 2007 to 2012.
Early Life and Education
Waddoups was born in 1954. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Utah. He subsequently pursued his legal education at the J. Reuben Clark Law School at Brigham Young University, where he received his Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree.
Career
Prior to his extensive career in public service, Waddoups practiced law for over two decades, gaining experience in various legal fields.
Utah State Senate
In 1998, Waddoups was elected to the Utah State Senate, representing District 6. He served in the Senate from 1999 until 2012. During his legislative tenure, he rose through the ranks to become a key leader. In 2007, he was elected President of the Utah State Senate, a position he held until his judicial appointment in 2012. As Senate President, he played a significant role in shaping Utah's legislative agenda and policy.
Utah Supreme Court
In 2012, Governor Gary Herbert appointed Michael G. Waddoups to the Utah Supreme Court. His appointment was notable given his direct transition from a senior legislative leadership role to the state's highest judicial body. He served as a Justice on the Utah Supreme Court from his appointment in 2012 until his retirement in 2021.
