Michael Francis Howley

Michael Francis Howley (1847 – 1915) was a Roman Catholic prelate who served as the Archbishop of St. John’s, Newfoundland. Born in St. John’s, Newfoundland, he was ordained to the priesthood in the late 19th century and later appointed Bishop of St. John’s, succeeding Bishop Thomas James. In 1895 he was elevated to the rank of archbishop, a position he held until his death in 1915. During his tenure, Howley oversaw the expansion of Catholic education and the construction of several parish churches within the archdiocese. He is noted for his efforts to strengthen ecclesiastical infrastructure in Newfoundland during a period of significant social and economic change.
