Michael Capasso is an American opera impresario, stage director, and arts administrator, best known for his long tenure as the founder and General Director of the Dicapo Opera Theatre and, subsequently, as the General Manager and Artistic Director of the New York City Opera (NYCO). He is recognized for his efforts in revitalizing opera companies and for his commitment to presenting both traditional and rarely performed operatic works.
Early Life and Education
Capasso was born in the United States and developed an early passion for opera. He pursued formal musical training, earning a Bachelor of Music degree in voice from the Mannes College of Music. He also continued his studies at the Juilliard School, further honing his understanding of operatic performance and production.
Dicapo Opera Theatre
In 1981, Michael Capasso founded the Dicapo Opera Theatre in New York City. Under his leadership as General Director, Dicapo Opera Theatre became a significant presence in the city's operatic landscape, known for its intimate venue, innovative programming, and dedication to showcasing emerging talent. The company produced a wide array of operas, ranging from canonical works to American premieres and rarely performed pieces, often with Capasso himself directing many of the productions. Dicapo Opera Theatre operated successfully for over three decades, contributing to the cultural vibrancy of New York before its eventual closure in 2013 due to financial and operational challenges.
New York City Opera
Following the bankruptcy and restructuring of the New York City Opera, Michael Capasso was appointed General Manager of the reorganized company in 2016. In 2017, he also assumed the role of Artistic Director. His appointment marked a new era for the struggling institution, often referred to as "the people's opera." Capasso was tasked with the challenging mission of rebuilding the company's artistic and financial stability. Under his leadership, NYCO has re-established a regular performance schedule, presenting a diverse repertoire that includes classic works, contemporary operas, and lesser-known gems. He has emphasized accessible ticket pricing and community engagement to broaden the company's appeal and ensure its long-term viability.
Directing and Other Work
Throughout his career, Capasso has directed over 100 operatic productions for various companies, including the Sarasota Opera, Glimmerglass Opera, and others in addition to his work with Dicapo and NYCO. His directorial style is noted for its dramatic clarity and respect for the composer's intentions. Beyond his administrative and directing roles, he has been a vocal advocate for the arts, particularly for increasing the accessibility of opera to diverse audiences.
