Miacatlán is a municipality and town located in the state of Morelos, Mexico. It is situated in the southeastern part of the state, bordering the state of Guerrero. The municipal seat, also called Miacatlán, serves as the primary population and administrative center of the municipality.
Geography
The municipality covers an area of approximately 112 km² (43 sq mi). It lies within the Cuautla District of the Central (Centro) region of Morelos. The terrain is predominantly lowland with some rolling hills, and the area includes portions of the Laguna de Miacatlán, a shallow lake that, together with the nearby Laguna de Tequesquitengo, forms a popular recreational zone.
History
Miacatlán's pre‑colonial history is linked to the Nahua peoples who inhabited the region. The name “Miacatlán” is derived from the Nahuatl language, though the exact meaning is uncertain; it is commonly interpreted as “place of the hand” or a related variant. The town was formally established during the Spanish colonial period, and it became a municipality in the state of Morelos after the state's creation in 1869.
Demographics
According to the 2020 Mexican Census, the municipality of Miacatlán had a total population of roughly 31,000 inhabitants. The majority of residents are of mestizo descent, and Spanish is the primary language spoken.
Economy
The local economy is based on agriculture, livestock raising, small‑scale commerce, and tourism. Principal agricultural products include corn, beans, and other staple crops.
