Metropolis is a large-scale mixed-use development complex located in the South Park district of Downtown Los Angeles, California. Situated on a 6.3-acre site, the project consists of four high-rise towers that include residential units, a hotel, and retail space. The development is positioned between the Financial District and the L.A. Live entertainment complex.
The history of the site dates back to the late 1980s when the project was first envisioned; however, it remained undeveloped for several decades through various changes in ownership and economic cycles. In 2014, the Shanghai-based Greenland Group, through its subsidiary Greenland USA, acquired the property and commenced construction. The project was completed in phases between 2017 and 2019.
The complex is composed of the following structures:
- Hotel Indigo: An 18-story building containing 350 guest rooms, serving as the boutique hotel component of the development.
- Tower R1: A 38-story residential tower.
- Tower R2: A 40-story residential tower.
- Tower R3: A 56-story residential tower, which is the tallest building in the complex.
Collectively, the three residential towers contain over 1,500 condominium units. The architectural design was led by the firm Gensler, with a focus on contemporary glass aesthetics and urban connectivity. The development includes significant communal amenities, such as a 1.5-acre "skypark" located on the podium levels, which features swimming pools, green spaces, and recreational facilities for residents.
Metropolis is recognized as one of the largest mixed-use developments in the Western United States and represents a significant portion of the revitalization efforts in Downtown Los Angeles during the 2010s.
