Metapolybia cingulata

Metapolybia cingulata is a species of social paper wasp in the family Vespidae (subfamily Polistinae), first described by Johann Christian Fabricius in 1804. It is known for its flexible behavioral groups, lack of distinct morphological castes, and frequent intraspecific usurpation behavior, wherein foreign queens invade and take over established colonies.

Description and Identification

Metapolybia cingulata has a mostly dark or black coloration with translucent wings. The abdomen is well-defined and slightly separated from the main body. Antennae protrude from the head and curve outward. Faint yellow stripes appear around the abdomen and eyes. Like most polybiines, this species lacks strongly differentiated morphological castes—it is not possible to determine whether a female is a queen or a worker by external appearance alone. Dissection is typically required to determine sex and caste.

Distribution and Habitat

This tropical, polygynous wasp has been observed in South America and the Caribbean, with confirmed records in:

  • Bolivia
  • Ecuador

Nests are typically found attached to the sides of buildings or other strong structures.

Nests

Nests consist of a comb, an envelope, and supporting structures. Five distinct construction-related behaviors have been identified:

  1. Specialized water foragers – Collect water from outside the nest and transport it back. They exchange water with pulp foragers to create cellulose paste. Water availability controls the tempo of the entire colony; the maximum observed rate was 101 water loads in 210 minutes (average ~2.08 minutes per trip).

  2. Flexible pulp foragers – Bring cellulose back to the colony. They spend about one-third of their activity transporting pulp. They first obtain water from a water forager, fly to a fiber source, mix water with the fiber, and carry the pulp back. They are "flexible" because they can take over other roles when needed and set the tempo of construction behavior.

  3. Active builders – Physically construct the nest (envelope, comb, external support). They receive large cellulose loads from pulp foragers, redistribute portions to other builders, malaxate the pulp with water, and work it into the nest using their mandibles. The process takes about seven minutes.

  4. Active generalists – Perform varied tasks as needed.

  5. Idle workers – Not actively participating but still perform occasional actions. Roughly half of the wasps constructing a nest may be idle.

Colony Cycle and Usurpation

New colonies are frequently formed through usurpation—a facultative intraspecific process of social parasitism. A foreign queen invades an established colony, kills or dominates the resident reproductive female, and takes over the reproductive role. This behavior is considered a possible early step toward more advanced social parasitism.

  • Worker exchange: If two colonies are related, workers and queens may be exchanged freely, and usurpation occurs with decreased aggression.
  • Unrelated invaders: An unrelated queen is met with hostility from both the resident queen and workers.
  • Deception: Invading queens may reduce their colony scent by spending time away from both nests, making their transition into the new colony smoother.

When two queens are present in the same colony (during usurpation), queen-to-queen competition occurs, especially in smaller colonies where it greatly alters social structure. Monogyny (single-queen colonies) is most common to avoid inter-queen competition.

Behavior

Worker behavior

Workers perform all maintenance tasks. Idle workers sit quietly on the comb and regurgitate food when solicited. Workers constantly groom the queen but not each other, suggesting attraction to the queen outweighs mutual attraction among workers.

Queen behavior

Queens are the sole recipients of trophallactic donations (exchange of liquid or food). Workers exchange loads with the queen but never with each other.

Aggression

  • Mild fights: Wasps grasp each other's faces with their hind legs, push abdomens together, and vigorously antennate.
  • Intense fights: Wasps attempt to bite the other's abdomen. Stinging motions (without actual stinging) are observed as a defense mechanism.
  • Display: Spreading wings wide is understood as an aggressive stance. Chewing through another individual's wings is also a signal of aggression.

Reproduction

Metapolybia cingulata typically has one sole reproductive female per colony. Workers enforce monogamy among themselves, limiting reproduction to the queen. This suppression of reproduction increases overall colony productivity and efficiency. The queen also suppresses reproduction among other females, giving birth to very few queens in her lifetime to avoid being overtaken. When many reproductively active females are present, it usually indicates a lack of dominance, which is more common in large colonies where hierarchy is difficult to maintain.
