Merrill Lake (Merrill Creek)

Merrill Creek is a 650-acre reservoir located in Harmony Township, Warren County, New Jersey, United States. Officially named the Merrill Creek Reservoir, it serves as an off-stream pumped storage facility designed to provide make-up water to the Delaware River during periods of drought or low flow. The reservoir is owned and operated by Talen Energy.

Water is pumped into the reservoir from the Delaware River during periods of high flow, and then released back into the river during periods of low flow, primarily during summer months. This helps to maintain adequate water levels in the Delaware River, particularly for drinking water supplies downstream.

The surrounding Merrill Creek Environmental Preserve encompasses approximately 290 acres of land, offering various recreational activities including hiking, fishing, boating (electric motors only), and bird watching. The preserve features trails through a diverse range of habitats, including forests, meadows, and wetlands. The Merrill Creek Visitor Center provides educational exhibits and programs about the reservoir's function, the local environment, and the importance of water conservation. The area is known for its abundant wildlife.
