Mereșeuca is a village and commune in Ocnița District, Moldova. It is the only village within the commune of the same name.
Location and Geography: The village is situated at coordinates 48°26′03″N 27°41′03″E, at an altitude of approximately 140 meters above sea level. It lies about 18 km from the town of Ocnița and approximately 218 km from the capital, Chișinău. The commune covers an area of about 20.26 km², while the village itself has a surface area of approximately 1.44 km².
History: Mereșeuca was first documented in the year 1437. At the eastern edge of the village lies the "Mereșeuca horodiște" (fortified settlement), where remnants of an ancient earthen fortification from the 9th–12th centuries have been preserved. Archaeological findings at the site include fragments of red pottery with brownish painting, attributed to the Cucuteni–Trypillia culture, as well as evidence of later Slavic tribes who built fortifications there. The fortification was abandoned by the 13th century.
Population: According to the 2004 census, the population was 1,157. The 2014 census recorded 1,104 inhabitants. The ethnic composition in 2004 was approximately 95.76% Moldovans, 3.63% Ukrainians, 0.26% Russians, 0.09% Gagauz, and 0.26% other ethnicities. The median age is about 36.6 years. The postal code is 7127.
Administration: The mayor of Mereșeuca is Emilia Albu (affiliated with the Democratic Party of Moldova). The local government includes a mayor's office, a cultural center, a library, a school, and a kindergarten. In 2014, after being closed for approximately 25 years, the village kindergarten was renovated and reopened through the "Global Partnership for Education" project, supported by the Ministry of Education of Moldova, the World Bank, and UNICEF.
