Melçan

Melçan is a village and a former municipality in Korçë County, southeastern Albania. As part of the 2015 local government reform, it became a municipal unit of the municipality of Korçë.

Geography Melçan is situated in the southeastern part of Albania, located a few kilometers west of the city of Korçë. The area is characterized by its hilly terrain and proximity to the fertile Korçë plain. The municipal unit of Melçan comprises the village of Melçan itself and several other smaller settlements within its administrative boundaries.

History The region around Melçan has a history of human habitation dating back to antiquity. Like much of Albania, it has experienced various periods of foreign rule, including Ottoman domination, which significantly influenced local culture and architecture. In the 20th century, the area, along with the broader Korçë region, played a role in Albania's national awakening and subsequent periods of political and social transformation.

Administration Prior to 2015, Melçan was an independent municipality. Following the administrative reforms implemented across Albania, it was merged into the larger municipality of Korçë. The municipal unit of Melçan today includes the villages of Melçan, Gjonbabas, Gorica, Mborje, Qershiza, Ravonik, and others. The administrative center for the municipal unit is the village of Melçan.

Demographics According to the 2011 Albanian census, the former municipality of Melçan had a population of 7,019 inhabitants. The population is predominantly Albanian.
