Mel Riebe

Melvin "Mel" Riebe (July 12, 1916 – July 25, 1972) was an American professional basketball player. A pioneering figure in the early years of professional basketball, he was known for his scoring prowess.

Riebe played college basketball at Marquette University. He then went on to play professionally in the Basketball Association of America (BAA), which was the precursor to the National Basketball Association (NBA). His career spanned the inaugural 1946-47 BAA season and part of the 1947-48 season.

He played for several teams during his BAA tenure, including:

  • Detroit Falcons (1946–1947)
  • Cleveland Rebels (1946–1947)
  • Boston Celtics (1947–1948)

Riebe consistently ranked among the league's top scorers during his time in the BAA. After his professional basketball career, he held various roles, including that of a high school basketball coach. He passed away in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, at the age of 56.
