Meighen Island

Meighen Island is an uninhabited island situated in the Qikiqtaaluk Region of Nunavut, Canada. It forms part of the Arctic Archipelago and lies within the western sector of the Queen Elizabeth Islands. The island is located in the Arctic Ocean, approximately 70 km (43 mi) east of Ellef Ringnes Island and 90 km (56 mi) west of Melville Island.

Geography

  • Area: Approximately 1,090 km² (421 sq mi).
  • Dimensions: Roughly 55 km (34 mi) in length and 30 km (19 mi) in width.
  • Topography: The island is characterized by a low-lying, gently undulating terrain composed primarily of sedimentary rock and glacial deposits. The highest point reaches an elevation of about 200 m (656 ft) above sea level.
  • Coastline: The shoreline is irregular, featuring numerous bays and inlets, as well as ice‑bound margins for much of the year.

Climate

Meighen Island experiences a polar climate (Köppen ET), with long, extremely cold winters and short, cool summers. Average annual temperatures remain well below freezing, and sea ice persists in surrounding waters for the majority of the year, limiting navigation and access.

Flora and Fauna

Vegetation is sparse, limited to tundra mosses, lichens, and low‑lying shrubs adapted to permafrost conditions. The island provides habitat for a range of Arctic wildlife, including:

  • Marine mammals: seals and occasional visits by polar bears.
  • Birds: migratory species such as gulls, terns, and the Arctic tern during the brief summer breeding season.

Human History and Naming

The island was first recorded by European explorers during early 20th‑century Arctic expeditions. It is named after Arthur Meighen (1874–1960), who served as the ninth Prime Minister of Canada. The naming was formalized by the Canadian Geographical Names Board.

No permanent settlements have been established on Meighen Island, and there are no known archaeological sites indicating prolonged indigenous habitation. The island remains largely untouched, serving primarily as a reference point for scientific research and occasional expeditionary visits.

Administrative Status

Meighen Island falls under the jurisdiction of the territory of Nunavut and is part of the Qikiqtaaluk (Baffin) Region. It is included within the Canadian Arctic Archipelago's protected areas framework, though it does not currently host designated wildlife reserves or parks.

Accessibility

Due to its remote location and persistent sea ice, access to Meighen Island is limited to specialized icebreaker vessels, aircraft equipped for polar conditions, or over‑land traverse from neighboring islands during brief periods of reduced ice cover.
