Medway, Nova Scotia

Medway, also known as Port Medday, is a small coastal community in the Canadian province of Nova Scotia. It is situated within the Region of Queens Municipality on the South Shore of the province, overlooking Medway Harbour at the mouth of the Medway River【1†L1-L3】.

Geography
The settlement lies at approximately 44° 7′ 53″ N latitude and 64° 37′ 40″ W longitude. The surrounding area features a rugged coastline, sheltered coves, and forested inland terrain that extends into the larger Kejimkujik National Park region.

History
The community’s origins trace to the mid‑18th century when Loyalist settlers from Massachusetts established a logging, shipbuilding, and fishing centre. By the early 19th century, Port Medway had developed a modest harbour with multiple wharves and supported a population of several thousand residents engaged in maritime trade【2†L1-L5】.

In 1851 a wooden lighthouse was erected on the western side of the harbour entrance (later known as Medway Head Lighthouse). A second, more centrally located lighthouse was commissioned in 1899 on the breakwater to improve navigation into the inner harbour【2†L6-L10】. The lighthouse, painted white and standing 33 feet tall, displayed a fixed red light visible for six nautical miles. It remained operational until its de‑commissioning in 1989; the structure was subsequently restored and incorporated into Port Medway Lighthouse Park, which opened in 2002 as a heritage and recreational site【2†L11-L18】.

Economy
Historically, Medway’s economy centred on timber extraction, shipbuilding, and a thriving fish‑processing industry. The decline of these sectors in the mid‑20th century led to a reduction in population and commercial activity. Today, the community’s economy is modest, with a focus on tourism, heritage preservation, and small‑scale fishing.

Landmarks and Attractions

  • Port Medway Lighthouse Park: Contains the restored 1899 lighthouse, interpretive walking trails, gardens, and a bandstand/picnic pavilion. The park is owned by the Municipality of Queens and is open to the public, though the lighthouse tower itself remains closed【2†L19-L22】.
  • Medway Harbour: Provides a sheltered anchorage for recreational vessels and remains a focal point for local marine activities.

Demographics
Medway is classified as an unincorporated community; detailed contemporary census data are not separately reported for the settlement, reflecting its small size within the broader Queens County region.
