Medenine Governorate (Arabic: ولاية مدنين Mednīn; French: Médenine) is one of the twenty‑four governorates (provinces) of the Republic of Tunisia. Situated in the southeastern part of the country, it encompasses the nation’s largest island, Djerba, and shares an eastern border with Libya. The governorate’s administrative centre is the city of Medenine.
Geography
The governorate occupies the southeasternmost coastal strip of Tunisia, covering a total area of 9 167 km² (3 539 sq mi), which ranks it third in size among the country’s governorates. Its territory includes a varied landscape of Mediterranean coastline, arid interior plains, and the island of Djerba, connected to the mainland by a regular ferry service. The region lies at approximately 33°21′17″ N latitude and 10°30′19″ E longitude.
History
Medenine Governorate was established on 21 June 1956, shortly after Tunisia’s independence from French colonial rule. The governorate’s boundaries have remained largely unchanged since its creation.
Administration
The governorate is headed by a governor appointed by the national government; as of 2024, the office is held by Walid Tabboubi. Administratively, the governorate is subdivided into several delegations (mutamadiyat) and further into municipalities (communes), which manage local affairs. The capital city, Medenine, serves as the primary hub for governmental and economic activities.
Demographics
According to the 2024 national census, Medenine Governorate had a population of 537 255, making it the tenth‑most populous governorate in Tunisia. The population density is approximately 58.6 inhabitants per square kilometre (151.8 sq mi). The demographic composition is predominantly Arab-Berber, with Arabic as the main language; French is also widely used in administration and education.
Economy
The governorate’s economy is diversified:
- Agriculture – cultivation of olives, dates, and citrus fruits in the coastal and inland areas.
- Tourism – the island of Djerba is a major tourist destination, attracting visitors for its beaches, historic sites, and cultural festivals.
- Fishing – coastal fishing activities contribute to local livelihoods.
- Industry – small‑scale manufacturing and processing, particularly of agricultural products, are present in and around the capital.
Infrastructure
Medenine Governorate is served by a network of national roads linking it to neighboring governorates (Gabès, Kebili, Sfax, and Tataouine) and to the Libyan border. Djerba Island hosts an international airport (Djerba–Zarzis International Airport), facilitating both domestic and international travel.
