Mead Public Library is a municipal public library located at 710 North 8th Street in downtown Sheboygan, Wisconsin, United States. It serves the residents of Sheboygan County and functions as the headquarters of the Monarch Library System, a regional consortium that includes libraries in Sheboygan, Ozaukee, Dodge, and Washington counties.
History
- Founding and early years – The library’s origins trace back to 1897, when James H. Mead, a prominent local businessman, bequeathed $20,000 to the City of Sheboygan for the establishment of a public library. Initially the collection was housed in various storefronts, including the Foeste Building.
- Carnegie building (1904) – With funding from Andrew Carnegie’s national library‑building program, the library moved into a dedicated brick and concrete building at the corner of North 7th Street and New York Avenue in 1904.
- Mid‑20th‑century expansion – In the early 1950s two branch libraries were opened: the Frank Stone branch attached to Cooper Elementary School and the Charles E. Broughton branch attached to Wilson Elementary School.
- Current facility (1974) – A 1970 bond issue of $2.3 million funded a new 64,000‑square‑foot building on North 8th Street and New York Avenue. Opened in 1974, the Brutalist‑style structure originally placed the main library on the second floor, the children’s room on the first floor, and administrative and system‑wide services in a landscaped basement.
