McDonald Heights is a broad, ice‑covered elevated area in Marie Byrd Land, Antarctica. The heights form a gently sloping plateau that extends for several tens of kilometres along the coast of the Ross Sea, situated between the east side of the Haines Glacier and the western margin of the Siple Coast. The terrain consists predominantly of snow and glacial ice, rising to elevations of approximately 900 m (2,950 ft) above sea level.
Discovery and mapping
The region was first observed and photographed from the air during aerial surveys conducted by the United States Antarctic Service (USAS) in 1939–1941. Subsequent detailed mapping was carried out by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) using surveys and aerial photographs taken by the U.S. Navy’s Operation Highjump (1946–1947) and later reconnaissance flights. These efforts produced topographic maps that defined the extent and contours of McDonald Heights.
