Mbuzini is a small settlement in the Mpumalanga province of South Africa, situated in the lowveld region near the southern border of the country. The community lies within the former Transvaal Province and is located close to the town of Nelspruit (now Mbombela) and the border with Eswatini. The name is of local origin, likely derived from a word in one of the Nguni languages (e.g., Zulu or Swati), though a precise etymology is not widely documented.
Historical significance
Mbuzini gained international attention on 19 October 1986, when a Mozambican Air Force Tupolev Tu‑134A aircraft crashed in the vicinity of the settlement. The crash resulted in the death of Samora Machel, the President of Mozambique, along with 27 other passengers and crew members. The accident occurred while the aircraft was en route from Maputo to Johannesburg. Subsequent investigations by South African, Mozambican and international authorities examined possible causes, including navigational equipment failure, pilot error, and external interference. The official South African inquiry concluded that the crash was primarily due to a navigational error that led the aircraft off its intended flight path.
In remembrance of the incident, a memorial was erected near the crash site. The site includes a monument, an information centre, and a burial area for some of the victims. Annual commemorative events are held at the memorial, reflecting the lasting impact of the tragedy on Mozambique–South Africa relations and on regional history.

Mbuzini is located within the Ehlanzeni District Municipality and falls under the jurisdiction of the Nkomazi Local Municipality. The settlement is situated at an elevation of approximately 770 metres (2 525 ft) above sea level.
