Mazhar Khaleqi

Mazhar Khaleqi (also transliterated as Mazhar Khaleghi; born 1938, Mahabad, Iran) is an Iranian Kurdish vocalist renowned for his performances of Kurdish folk and traditional music. His career, spanning several decades, has contributed significantly to the preservation and popularization of Kurdish musical heritage both within the Kurdish diaspora and internationally.

Early life and education
Mazhar Khaleqi was born in Mahabad, a city in the West Azerbaijan Province of Iran, to a Kurdish family. Details about his early education are limited, but he began singing at a young age, drawing influence from regional folk traditions and the works of earlier Kurdish musicians.

Career

  • 1950s–1960s: Khaleqi commenced his public singing career in the late 1950s, performing on Iranian radio and at local cultural events. In 1959, he relocated to Erbil (present-day Iraq), where he continued to develop his repertoire and gained recognition among Kurdish audiences.
  • 1970s: Political tensions in the region prompted Khaleqi to leave the Middle East. He settled in Europe, initially in Germany and later in Sweden, where he continued to record and perform. During this period, he released several albums that combined traditional Kurdish melodies with contemporary arrangements.
  • 1980s–present: Khaleqi has remained an active figure in the Kurdish music scene, performing at cultural festivals, concerts, and diaspora gatherings. His recordings have been disseminated through radio, television, and later digital platforms, helping sustain Kurdish musical traditions among younger generations.

Musical style and repertoire
Khaleqi’s vocal style is characterized by a clear, emotive timbre and a focus on lyrical storytelling. His repertoire includes classic Kurdish folk songs, love ballads, and patriotic pieces that reflect Kurdish cultural identity. While rooted in traditional modalities, his recordings occasionally incorporate modern instrumentation, such as electric guitars and keyboards, to broaden appeal without compromising the authenticity of the source material.

Legacy and recognition
Mazhar Khaleqi is regarded as one of the leading exponents of Kurdish folk music in the 20th and early 21st centuries. He has been credited with preserving numerous traditional songs that might otherwise have been lost. His influence is evident in the work of subsequent Kurdish singers who cite him as a mentor or inspiration. Though specific awards or honors are not comprehensively documented in publicly available sources, his standing within Kurdish musical circles is widely acknowledged.
