Maynooth University (Irish: Ollscoil Mhá Nuad) is a public university located in Maynooth, County Kildare, Ireland. It is one of the country’s seven constituent universities of the National University of Ireland (NUI) system.
History
- Founded in 1795 as St. Patrick’s College, Maynooth, originally a Catholic seminary for the training of priests.
- In 1997 the institution was granted university status under the Universities Act 1997 and began operating as the National University of Ireland, Maynooth (NUIM).
- In 2014 the university officially adopted the trading name “Maynooth University” while retaining its legal title within the NUI system.
Campus
- The main campus occupies a 50‑hectare site in the town of Maynoath, adjacent to Maynooth Castle and the historic seminary buildings.
