Maximilian Kuschel

Maximilian Kuschel (1851 – 1909) was a German ornithologist and oologist known for his extensive work on bird eggs and for maintaining a significant egg collection that is now housed at the State Museum of Zoology in Dresden.

Early life and education
Kuschel was born on 12 March 1851 in Breslau, then part of Prussia (now Wrocław, Poland). Details about his formal education are not extensively documented in reliable sources.

Professional career
Aside from his scientific pursuits, Kuschel served as a police official (Polizeirat a. D.) at the police presidium in Guhrau and later in his hometown of Breslau. His involvement in ornithology was marked by active participation in the Deutsche Ornithologen‑Gesellschaft (German Ornithological Society). He also corresponded with the Natural History Museum at Tring, contributing observations and specimens.

Contributions to ornithology and oology
Kuschel specialized in oology, the study of bird eggs. He amassed a large collection of eggs, which was recognized as an important scientific resource and eventually transferred to the State Museum of Zoology in Dresden. His work provided valuable data on egg morphology and reproductive biology of various bird species, particularly those from Java and the Ethiopian region.

Selected publications

  • Zur Oologie Javas (1895) – published in Ornithologische Monatsberichte, discussing the eggs of Javan birds.
  • Abrifs einer Beschreibung von Vogeleiern der äthiopischen Ornis (1895) – appeared in Journal für Ornithologie, offering a description of eggs from the Ethiopian avifauna.
  • Ûber die Fortpflanzung von Cassidix oryzivora Scl. (1897) – also in Journal für Ornithologie, detailing the breeding biology of the rice bird (Cassidix oryzivora).

Legacy
Kuschel’s egg collection remains a reference point for contemporary oologists and ornithologists studying historical variation in avian reproductive traits. His contributions are cited in later works on avian egg identification and taxonomy.
